Paeng, Bata among most trusted Filipinos

AT A TIME when trust in many government institutions and officials are being continually eroded by reports of rampant graft and corruption and a widening gap between those who have so much and the millions who have so very little, any recognition of trustworthiness comes as a refreshing break in our daily lives.

Indeed it somehow allows us a chance to pause and re-evaluate the situation in national society and the manner in which we actually look at one another.

We have always maintained that our athletes in various disciplines are often the saving grace of our nation. They are examples of individuals who commit themselves to the search for excellence and who live by the values and virtues of hard work, discipline, fairness and love for our country.

It is against this background that we feel a deep sense of satisfaction that two fine athletes from opposite sides of economic and social backgrounds have made the top 10 in a nationwide poll conducted some time ago by Reader’s Digest.

In the poll where the names of 80 Filipinos from different walks of life were submitted to individuals across the country in a survey to determine levels of trustworthiness, four-time world bowling champion Rafael “Paeng” Nepomuceno finished No. 6 and “The Magician” Efren “Bata” Reyes, the greatest pool player of all time landed in the No. 10 spot.

To us the trustworthiness was ennobled by the fact that Rosa Rosal, who has given her life to the cause of the Red Cross and who has demonstrated over the past few decades her remarkable sense of caring for the less fortunate, was No. 1. Consummate singer-actress and shining example of Filipino talent, Lea Salonga, was second. Two other outstanding women, TV public affairs host Jessica Soho and TV anchorwoman Mel Tiangco, a lady of the finest order, were No. 3 and No. 9, respectively.

Men of distinction also made the top ten with Gawad Kalinga’s Tony Meloto at No. 4 followed by President Noynoy Aquino, documentary film maker Howie Severino at No. 7 and Inquirer columnist Randy David at No. 8.

Nepomuceno, who has always shown unmistakable pride in being a Filipino, always competed internationally with the Philippine flag emblazoned across his shirt and has been a perfect example of a sportsman and a gentleman of remarkable talent and essential class. He represented our country with distinction and his family with the quiet style inherent in men who are worthy of his countrymen’s esteem.

The toothless grin of Reyes, his tendency to scratch his head and smile when making a shot his competitors would never have even thought of, and his simple, down-to-earth manner have endeared him to both opponents and fans around the pool halls of the world.

To be considered among the most trustworthy in a sport that is perceived to be one marred by gambling and game-fixing is not merely a tribute to the unsullied reputation of Reyes but a tribute to the men who molded the man’s character and supported him with pride through the years—the brothers Aristeo “Putch” Puyat and former congressman Jose “Poppit” Puyat. In a sense the picture is completed by the reality that Nepomuceno is the son in law of the congressman.

In the language of horse owners and breeders, it’s the bloodline that counts. When we realize that Paeng and Efren come from vastly different spectrums of Philippine society, it proves, beyond reasonable doubt, that men from both the ranks of the poor and from the shelter of the well-to-do have the essential character of trustworthiness which we as Filipinos must learn to emulate and build on.

Noynoy, Paeng in Reader's Digest Most Trusted Personalities

Noynoy most trusted poll
in Reader’s Digest survey, Paeng also included

An independent survey by the Asian edition of Reader’s Digest shows that Liberal Party standard bearer Sen. Noynoy Aquino is the most trusted politician in the country.

The 50-year old senator from Tarlac was the only presidentiable in the top 10 rankings of the nationwide poll – the first ever done by the popular monthly international magazine in the Philippines. The result of the poll will be released in the magazine’s March issue.

His closest rival, NP bet Sen. Manny Villar, ranked 60th among the 80 personalities listed in the survey. The poll asked a cross-section of 760 Filipino respondents about the trustworthiness of those in the list.

“In the current climate of economic, environmental and political uncertainty, now more than ever, people are looking for security and assurance in their lives. Part of this includes deciding which public figures they can rely on and trust,” according to Sarah Etchells in the magazine’s website.

“Filipinos are no different. The decision is even more significant in the Philippines as this is a country that’s had major grievances with those it has trusted,” she added. The respondents were a cross-section of 760 Filipinos.

Social worker Rosa Rosal was first in the list, followed by singer-actress Lea Salonga, and broadcaster Jessica Soho. In fourth place was Gawad Kalinga founder Tony Meloto while Aquino ranked 5th.

The other personalities in the top 10 are bowling champ Paeng Nepomuceno (6th), broadcast journalist Howie Severino (7th), anthropologist and commentator Randy David (8th), broadcast journalist Mel Tiangco (9th), and billiards champ Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, (10th).

Aquino’s running mate, Sen. Mar Roxas, placed 24th while President Arroyo was one of the least trusted at 78. Former President Joseph Estrada was ranked at 79, next to controversial Dr. Hayden Kho who was least trusted of all in the list.

Also in the bottom 10 are Ilocos Sur Rep. and NP senatorial bet Bongbong Marcos (73), television host Willie Revillame (75), and former First Lady Imelda Marcos (77).

“Trust (for Filipinos) means 100 percent confidence. It means to depend on someone or something without any hint of doubt,” Etchells wrote, quoting Alvaro Nagpala Calara, an assistant professor of behavioral sciences teacher at De La Salle University.

Paeng Nepomuceno in the Entrance of the New International Bo

Campus Spotlight
First coaching certification course at IBC to be held this weekend

One of the sport's most regarded international competitors and coaches, Paeng Nepomuceno (pictured), got a first-hand look at the International Bowling Campus on Thursday.

Nepomuceno, a six-time world champion from the Philippines, has worked with the United States Bowling Congress Coaching program over the past three years to certify more than 300 coaches around the world. As part of his continuing education, he paid a visit to the new facilities in Arlington, Texas.

"This facility is the most modern in regards to the coaching and all the advances are really mind-boggling," Nepomuceno said after receiving a tour of the International Training and Research Center. "I salute USBC and the whole International Bowling Campus for putting up a complex like this."

Nepomuceno, who is featured prominently in the new International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame with a large display just inside the front entrance (pictured right), is considered a national sports hero in the Philippines. He was the first athlete to be enshrined in the Philippine Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame after that group five times named him Athlete of the Year. He was also named Filipino Athlete of the Century in 1999.

The left-hander, who was named Federation Internationale des Quilleurs (bowling's world governing body) Bowling Athlete of the Millennium in 1999, has won 118 bowling titles worldwide, including a record four QubicaAMF World Cup championships in three different decades.

Although he still competes on the lanes, Nepomuceno, 53, is committed to certifying coaches through USBC Coaching and has scheduled upcoming certification courses in June in Jakarta, Indonesia, and in July in Hong Kong.

"I believe in USBC's goal to put bowling in the Olympics one day," said Nepomuceno, who teaches Level 1, Bronze and Silver level courses. "By helping train coaches around the world, this is one way I can help."

Nepomuceno is visiting the International Bowling Campus not only to see the new facilities but also to get updates on the USBC Coaching program by taking part in a USBC Silver certification course this weekend.

"It's great to get athletes such as Paeng, with all his history, knowledge and respect, here to visit our facilities," said Neil Stremmel (right), USBC Vice President of National Governing Body. "He's offering valuable input on the services we are providing here, and I hope he is the first of many international coaches and athletes who visit the International Bowling Campus."

Nearly 30 coaches from the United States, United Kingdom and Mexico will take part in the first coaching certification course at the International Bowling Campus this weekend.
